300 th Anniversary of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City (1698-1998)  -  Code: 775

Saigon City was founded in early 1698 when Nguyen Huu Canh (1650 - 1700) was appointed to Gia Dinh by Nguyen Lord to establish the first administrative power in the South of Vietnam. At that time, Saigon was named Gia Dinh City comprising: Saigon, Cho Lon, Gia Dinh and Bien Hoa. And then, Gia Dinh was renamed Saigon in the period of the French domination (1860 - 1954).

Over the past 300 years, Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City has gained innumerable resounding victories that have been written down in the nation_s glorious history throughout the struggle for national defence and building a Socialist State as well.. Saigon has entered in the national history with so many miraculous performances. In 1976, after the national reunification, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City by the National Assembly. To celebrate the 300th Anniv. of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City_s Foundation (1698- 1998), Department General of Posts _ Telecommunications (DGPT), issues the stampset "300th Anniversary of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City" consisting of 2 values and one block.

- The 1st: Ho Chi Minh City_s revolutionary tradition _ their feeling to President Ho Chi Minh - face value: 400 d.  This value features the image of President Ho Chi Minh at the Tours Congress and Nha Rong Wharf where he left in search of national salvation.

- The 2nd: Ho Chi Minh City_s renovation cause of industrialization _ modernization - face value: 5,000 d. It describes the Uncle Ho - Vietnamese Children Bronze Statue designed by Diep Minh Chau sculptor (standing in front of People_s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City). Behind the statue are the pictures of great achievements that Ho Chi Minh City has gained in the course of construction _ development.

- The block: Gia Dinh - Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City (1698 - 1998), face-value: 14,000d

In the middle of block is the image of Nguyen Huu Canh Statue, the founder of Gia Dinh (former name of Saigon). At the top is the plan of Gia Dinh city_s eight-trigrams and at the bottom is map of Gia Dinh district. At the both sides of the city_s eight-trigrams are famous places in Saigon

On 30.04.1998, at the Post Officeof Ho Chi Minh City, the Department General of Posts and Telecommunications organizes a special issuing ceremony for this stampset.
