Ngo Quyen - National Hero
Code: 815

Ngo Quyen was born in 898 and died in 944 in Duong Lam, Phuc Loc district, Ha Tay province (formerly Chau Giao). He was a national hero who set up Ngo's dynasty. His father is Ngo Man who was head mandarin in Duong Lam during Khuc family's uprisings.

Ngo Quyen, a talented general, was held in esteem by General Duong Dinh Nghe and then allowed to marry his daughter. He and his father-in-law successfully chased the Nam Han troops in their 1st invasion (930 -931) and then was authorised by his father-in-law to rule Chau Ai (Thanh Hoa).

In 937, to get " Tiet do su" position (a head mandarin in border region under feudal regime) Duong Dinh Nghe was assassinated by Kieu Cong Tien. Hearing the bad news, Ngo Quyen advanced his troops from Chau Ai (Thanh Hoa) to chastise the betrayer. Frightened by this, Kieu Cong Tien asked for Nam Han' help, consequently Vietnam forced to fight against the second aggression of Nam Han (in 938).

Fully supported by the military & people, Ngo Quyen raised troops to defeat Dai La Citadel, killed Kieu Cong Tien, wiped out internal conflicts, retained country's stabilization and urgently prepared for resistance war.

At Bach Dang battle, his strategic scheme was to fix iron-topped wood across the sea-gate. When the tide was up, Ngo Quyen troops' small boats provoked a war to Nam Han troops, and then pretended to escape in order to trap them into prepared - array. When the tide was down, the wooden stakes appeared, Ngo Quyen troops counter-attacked. While escaping, the enemy's boats were broken down by the wooden stakes and most of them wrecked, over half of enemy drowned. Nam Han troops were defeated entirely. Bach Dang battle made a resounding victory in Vietnam's national history against foreign aggression at the end of 938, putting an end to over 1,000 years under foreign rule. Our country regained the sovereignty and an independent stage was ushered.

After the victory, Ngo Quyen ascended the throne, recognised Queen and established court's organisation & rule. He passed away in 944 (Year of the Dragon) at the age of 47.

In order to memorise King Ngo Quyen, a national hero who has made a great contribution to the cause of fighting against foreign invasion & maintaining national independence, Department General of Posts & Telecommunications (DGPT) issues the stampset "King Ngo Quyen" with a face value of VND400.

On the stamp is the image of Ngo Quyen Statue and Bach Dang victory (in 938), a national epic.
