THE WONDERLAND OF VIETNAMESE STAMPS '99
Buffalo-fighting has since long been held in various regions throughout Vietnam but most noticeably those in Do Son (Hai Phong) & Phong Chau (Phu Tho). Nowadays, buffalo-fighting becomes an original traditional festival.
As usual, buffalo-fighting festivals are held in Spring (the 2nd lunar month) and in Autumn (the 8th lunar month).
The atmosphere on these days is quite noisy & seething. Among the "forest of multi-coloured flags" is the sound of drum, shouting of thousands of audience in buffalo-fighting. The most seething moment is when a "strong ox" hurled down his rival with a dangerous lunge.
The festival's attraction makes many people neglect eating, tiredness.
The festival is not only purely a buffalo-fighting competition, but also a good chance for local ceremonies such as "offerring sacrifices to the god", "praying for safeness" in accordance with Vietnamese ancient people's spirit.
Buffalo-fighting is among over 60 Vietnamese traditional festivals imbued with her fine cultural identities. In order to present this festival, Department General of Posts & Telecommunications (DGPT) issues the stampset "Buffalo-fighting Festival" consisting of two values designed in folk style:
