THE WONDERLAND OF VIETNAMESE STAMPS '99

Fighting against Poverty
Code: 818

Eradication of hunger and alleviation of poverty is a major policy of the Vietnamese Government for the purpose of improving living conditions of people, especially in the remotest areas. Eradication of hunger and alleviation of poverty to bring about a happy and wealthy life to everyone has been proved through the Government's strategic policy along with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s assistance and co-operation.

UNDP's activities in Vietnam cover various fields with a great deal of projects: from the State macro-management project "Enhancing legislative capacity in Vietnam" to the project "Strengthening capability of development for the ethnic minorities in Vietnam" with training human beings to have been considered its foremost task.

In order to widely propagandize Vietnamese Government's policy on eradication of hunger and alleviation of poverty and UNDP's positive activities for the past few years, on the International Day of Poverty Alleviation (October 17, 1999), the Department General of Posts and Telecommunications (DGPT) issues the stampset "Fighting against Poverty" consisting of two values.

The 2-1:
This value shows minority women's joy in their happy and wealthy lives thanks to UNDP and Vietnamese Government's projects on the development of agriculture, forestry and fishery.

The 2-2:
To abolish hunger and reduce poverty urgently requires strengthening of human capability. This value shows a democratic discussion on imperative affairs to be done for their native-villages. This activity presents the characteristics of high-community which UNDP has been carrying out in Vietnam. It is a pressing activity, directly relating to local people in remote areas.

Besides, on the stamp is UNDP's logo and the image of infrastructure works invested by UNDP for construction and development.

* This issue is implemented in coordination with UNDP in Vietnam.
